UK startup FX Technology uses IFA 2019 to present its interpretation of a smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard. The reincarnation of Nokia Communicator unites a modern AMOLED with a SoC of 2017. The Pro 1 has been shown several times, now it is officially available.

Modern AMOLED display meets antique Snapdragon

The specifications of the British QWERTZ and QWERTY smartphones not only seem at first glance to be unusual. On the one hand, FX Technology installs a state-of-the-art 5.99-inch AMOLED 2: 1 display with Full HD + resolution (2,160 × 1,080 pixels) and a pixel density of 403 ppi, but combines this with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. Qualcomm's time-honored high-end SoC model was launched at the end of 2016 in the 10-nanometer FinFET process at the Samsung vendor. In terms of, among other things, multitasking and sustainability, this decision raises questions.

A thick slider with 66-key full keyboard

The case of the Pro 1 has to pay tribute to the full-featured keyboard with its 66 keys, the slider smartphone is 14 mm high and thus almost twice as thick as many current smartphones. The full dimensions are 154 × 74 × 14 mm. Inside there is also a battery with 3,200 mAh space. This is nominal, in view of the large display and the slightly older processor, but also current flagship, relatively small in size. The manufacturer still speaks of a talk time of 10 hours and 480 hours in standby. Quick charging is provided by Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0.

Contemporary storage and connectivity

Unlike the SoC, the memory equipment of the slider can be described as contemporary. In the Pro 1, 6 GB RAM of type LPDDR4 meets 128 GB of flash memory, which can be expanded by microSD by up to 2 TB. In terms of connectivity, the smartphone offers Wi-Fi for Wi-Fi 5 (formerly EEE 802.11ac), LTE and NFC for contactless payment.

The main 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 and F / 1.8 aperture camera is backed by a 5 megapixel F / 2.0 aperture camera for depth information. The front camera has 8 megapixels and is not in a Notch, but in the frame. Stereo speakers and a 3.5mm jack complete the features of the FX Tec Pro 1.

Availability and price

The FX Tec Pro 1 can now be ordered from the manufacturer's official online shop, delivery is scheduled for mid-September. The smartphone comes with Android 9. You can choose between a QWERTY and a QWERTZ version, which is intended exclusively for Europe. The cost is 650 euros.
