After only 27,000 of the targeted 100,000 folding operations, the new edition of the classic Motorola Razr folding mobile phone had to be published by the US media magazine CNET in advance, the sails could not be opened and closed properly. Unlike the dents and dents, this is a defect.

Folding mechanism on strike after 27,000 operations

After exactly 27,218 of the 100,000 planned folding processes, the folding mechanism of the new Motorola Razr went on strike and made conspicuously “unhealthy” noises.

The folding smartphone was previously clamped in a specially designed machine, with the help of which the retreaded Samsung Galaxy Fold could be successfully opened and closed a hundred thousand times.

After a good three and a half hours, the reinterpretation of Motorola’s classic allowed no further folding and then quit the service. CNET made the entire test procedure public in a four-hour video.

Regarding the bumps and dents that can occur after a certain period of use – and which Motorola calls normal – the company has already published a video entitled “Caring for Razr” with tips for the correct use of the folding smartphone. Also in the test by CNET there is a clearly visible wave formation at the edge of the foldable display.

Shelf life of a maximum of two and a half years

Assuming 30 folds per day, the new Motorola Razr would therefore most likely suffer from a defect in the folding mechanism after 900 days or less than two and a half years.

With 40 folds, the foldable smartphone would last less than two years, whereas studies in the US assume 80 folds per day, which would damage the Razr in less than a year.

The result should be enjoyed with caution

Motorola has not yet commented on the incident, which is why it cannot yet be said with certainty whether the US website caught a faulty device or affected all smartphones in the series. In any case, it should be noted that the machine simulates use of around two to two and a half years within 4 hours, which also does not correspond to normal everyday use. The result should therefore be enjoyed with caution for the time being.
