After months of waiting and almost half a year after the first announcement, customers of Commerzbank and Sparkassen can now use Apple Pay. Already in June of this year, the Volksbanks and savings banks promised to support Apple's payment service. At least Sparkasse and Commerzbank are starting now.
Apple Pay can only be used by credit card
Just a few days ago, customers of the savings banks were able to add their cards to the Apple Wallet, and from now on, the cards will work with Apple Pay. The Sparkasse calls for the following conditions:
- An Apple Pay-enabled device
- An Apple ID
- The S-App (latest version)
- A savings bank account with a savings bank credit card
- An activation for online banking (using ePostfach and pushTAN or chipTAN procedures)
The savings bank calls however at the start already first restrictions. Apple's payment service currently only works with Visa or Mastercard credit cards and Sparkasse's rechargeable debit card (“Sparkassen-Karte Basis”).
In order to use Apple Pay at Commerzbank, in addition to an Apple Pay-enabled device and a checking account at the credit institution, the just recently updated Commerzbank app is necessary. For the time being, a credit card is also mandatory at Commerzbank.
Giro and Maestro cards for the time being outside
Customers who want to use Apple Pay with the widespread Giro and Maestro cards, however, have to be patient again – their use, both banks until an unspecified date in 2020 unlock.
