Surprisingly, Qualcomm has announced a performance-enhanced version of the Snapdragon 855. The Snapdragon 855 Plus with more CPU and GPU clock is expected to drive flagship smartphones in the second half of the year. Asus plans with the ROG Phone II a suitably equipped new edition of the gaming smartphone.

For the Snapdragon 855 Plus, Qualcomm has raised the maximum clock of the Prime Core, which used to be 2.84 GHz, to 2.96 GHz. The naming scheme has not changed with the designation Kryo 485 for the four cores based on the ARM Cortex-A75. According to the press release, Qualcomm has made no changes to the remaining three cryo-485 cores so that they continue to run at a maximum of 2.42 GHz. The four smaller cores of the SoC, also called Kryo 485 Silver, which are based on the Cortex-A55 clock with up to 1.80 GHz.

In addition to the CPU, Qualcomm has redesigned the GPU. The unchanged Adreno 640 graphics unit offers a 15 percent higher performance than the Snapdragon 855, according to Qualcomm. Since Qualcomm does not use a new design with a different number of shader units, there is only an increase in the maximum clock frequency. Qualcomm does not disclose the clock speeds of the GPU, but previously the Snapdragon 855 had 585 MHz. Anandtech now suspects up to 672 MHz.

Qualcomm selects in two classes

Both changes argue for binning at a higher level, which allows higher clock frequencies. Apparently, Qualcomm can select the SoC in two classes, which differ, for example, in parameters such as overclocking potential and energy efficiency. The better chips are new Snapdragon 855 Plus, the worse to normal Snapdragon 855th The production remains at 7 nm from TSMC.

Apart from the clock adjustments, Qualcomm made no changes to the SoC. What the Snapdragon 855 can do, ComputerBase has explained in detail about the launch of the SoC at the end of last year. The Snapdragon 855 (Plus) is still Qualcomm's only smartphone chip that can be made 5G ready via the Snapdragon X50 modem. In the next step, Qualcomm will be able to integrate a multi-mode modem (X55) for all mobile standards directly into the SoC for the first time in December.

Asus teasers ROG Phone II

Parallel to the announcement of Qualcomm Asus has announced the ROG Phone II with Snapdragon 855 Plus respectively in view, because in addition to the built-in processor is still lacking any information. The basis for the new edition is to deliver the predecessor model (test), which in the new version with “equipped with additional innovative features” should be. Further details as well as price and availability of the ROG Phone II will be announced by Asus at a later date. The IFA, which will take place in Berlin at the beginning of September, is considered a potential date.
