Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ in the test: The Galaxy S10 + on steroids and with stylus

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ im Test: Das Galaxy S10+ auf Steroiden und mit Stylus

tl; dr: The Galaxy Note 10+ is one of two new Samsung smartphones with stylus. It can not only be used for notes, for painting and as a remote control, but also for gesture control. The smartphone itself feels like an oversized Galaxy S10 + – with all its many advantages and disadvantages.

Samsung Galaxy Note series is the pioneer of large smartphones with large display and large battery. Anno 2011 in the Galaxy Note II (test) still equipped with 5.3 inches, as the iPhone 4S (test) just 3.5 inches offered, the diagonal has grown in the meantime to at least 6.3 inches. And that only if the Galaxy Note 10 and not the tested here Galaxy Note 10+ with 6.8 inches is used.

For the first time two new Galaxy Note

This year, Samsung is dividing the new generation into two models, whereby the Galaxy Note 10+ must be seen as a true successor to the Galaxy Note 9, since only here all the features of a high-end smartphone are offered. The normal Galaxy Note 10 with smaller display, lower resolution, less memory, a camera less, without memory expansion and with a smaller battery Samsung would honestly have to call Galaxy Note 10e. The technical specifications underpin this impression.

Galaxy Note 10+ starts at 1099 euros

The prices, however, remained approximately the same, and they can only be compared to the 512-GB model in terms of the EIA due to the changed storage equipment. Was the Galaxy Note 9 (test) with 128 GB once at 999 euros, it is 949 euros for the Galaxy Note 10 with 256 GB, but compared to the Galaxy Note 10+, the actual successor, worse features. This in turn costs now 1,099 euros and thus with double storage 100 euros more than last year. The 512 GB model this year is at 1,199 euros, previously it was 1,249 euros.

Overview of the Note 10 Series Specifications

The note design is more square

A very nice chunk is the Galaxy Note 10+, because with 77.2 × 162.3 × 7.9 millimeters (W × H × D) it is only thinner, but otherwise wider and higher than the Galaxy Note 9 become. The smartphone also looks bigger in the hand than a Galaxy S10 +, because Samsung has changed again for the note to a more angular design. The radii of the display running in the frame are smaller, the usable screen area increases thereby. The primary features of a Galaxy smartphone, but also has the note 10+. This is primarily the approximately symmetrical structure of the front and back, which meet with a slight bend in the middle of the frame, which in turn runs as a narrow line left and right around the smartphone, before he up and down in full depth the two glass elements surrounds.

Samsung streamlines the headphone jack away

There is enough room for the SIM tray at the top, which can only hold a microSD card for the 10+ grade as an alternative to the second SIM card, while the USB Type C port, the second speaker and the S Pen at the bottom, as Samsung calls the stylus, sit. Anyone who misses the jack connection in this list will not find it elsewhere. Note 10 and Note 10+ are Samsung's first flagship smartphones without a 3.5mm jack. Ironically, starting with the Galaxy Note and not just the S11, whose target audience is potentially less sensitive to such changes, is a curious decision on the part of Samsung. But it has now been cut down and so are the Note 10+ USB Type-C headphones from AKG, a pure USB Type-C cable and a new power supply with the appropriate connection – but not 3.5-mm Adapter to connect old headphones.

Processing at a very high level

What has not changed, however, are Samsung's high quality materials and meticulous workmanship. Where, due to the design, the smallest gap sizes exist, they run evenly. Otherwise, the touch 10+ looks like a piece, a sculpture made of little aluminum and a lot of glass, which is therefore just as fragile. Because the grade 10+ is very big and also pretty slippery. If the smartphone crashes from the belly level towards the ground, even the Gorilla Glass 6 can not prevent damage. Only for dust and water to a depth of 1.5 meters and 30 minutes, the IP68 protection. By the way, this also applies if the S Pen is not in the case.

Inspired by the colors of Huawei

In terms of design, Samsung seems to have been inspired a little by Huawei, because the tested “Aura Glow” with its depending on the angle of different color spectrum, which can be described as a chrome rainbow, would not have previously seen in Samsung, as primarily black and white were offered. Also, the layout of the triple camera is reminiscent of the P30 Pro. Where once copied Huawei Cupertino and Korea, the sheet seems to have turned something.

6.8-inch display with WQHD resolution

In its own league, Samsung is still playing the screen, which collects at 6.8 inches at the touch 10+ 3.040 × 1.440 pixels. The touch 10 has to get by at 6.3 inches with 2,280 × 1,080 pixels. By default, but also the touch 10+ runs only in this resolution, only in the settings of the display can choose the full resolution. In both devices, the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is integrated in the display.

A hole in the display instead of Notch

The Notch theme is different for Samsung at Note 10 and Note 10+ than at the Galaxy S10. Where the front camera was in the upper right corner of the display in the spring, it has now moved into the middle. Dual front cameras are gone, the bokeh effect for selfies is calculated by software without a second lens. The hole of the camera is barely noticed in everyday life, in 16: 9 videos anyway a black bar appears on the left and right. Samsung obviously did not want to trust an extendable camera like OnePlus at the 7 Pro (test) and cameras under the display are not yet ready for use. In this respect, Samsung has decided after the Drop Notch for the next best solution. The only downside is a twice as high Android status bar.

OLED with natural appearance

As with the S10 series, buyers of the Note 10+ are surprised by a pleasingly natural appearance. Gone are the days when Samsung delivered its OLED displays with maximum saturation, falsified white point and countless display profiles. By default, a natural mode with correct white point and normal saturation is set, which is strongly reminiscent of the vote of Samsung also originating OLED display in the iPhone XS Max (test). If you want the colors a bit more powerful and the white a bit bluer, you can also choose the “living” mode, which also allows a few percentage points higher maximum brightness.

High maximum brightness depends on white content

However, this also sounds ex-factory, although OLED-typical, the white component is crucial for the measured value. And again: Only those who use the automatic regulation of brightness, can exploit the full potential. With manual regulation, the natural mode already ends at 380 cd / m², with the living profile it is 394 cd / m². In automatic mode, the grade creates 10+ 600 cd / m² and 616 cd / m², respectively. With a reduced white content of 20 percent, values of 855 cd / m² and 874 cd / m² respectively are possible. Samsung's own statement of up to 1,200 cd / m² refers to even smaller image areas. The display is sufficiently bright in almost every situation, only manually available is the full potential just not.

Samsung dispenses with higher refresh rate

As good as the display of the Note 10+ is, one thing is missing: a higher refresh rate. Where, for example, Asus and OnePlus offer up to 120 Hz using OLED, Samsung remains at the familiar 60 Hz. While they feel sufficiently liquid on their own, once they have enjoyed 90 Hz or more, misses this feature on other smartphones. Samsung could have expected a bit more here, especially for the new Plus model of the Note series.
