Almost two weeks before Samsung’s next unpacked event on February 11, almost all the details for the upcoming folding smartphone Galaxy Z Flip have now been published. Of WinFuture collated high-resolution marketing images and technical data already allow a comprehensive view of the smartphone.
The Galaxy Z Flip will be Samsung’s next folding smartphone and should be presented on February 11th together with the new Galaxy S20 family, about which thanks to numerous leaks there are also hardly any details hidden.
Display with a thin layer of glass
Unlike Samsung’s first folding smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip becomes a smartphone with a clamshell design that can be opened using a horizontal instead of a vertical hinge and, when open, a 6.7-inch display in 22: 9 Format with 2,636 × 1,080 pixels. A layer of “Ultra Thin Glass” is supposed to better protect the OLED panel with HDR10 + support from scratches than is the case with the Galaxy Fold. The German specialist Schott is likely to be the supplier of the glass, as was already assumed in January. The display should be able to be freely positioned between 70 and 110 degrees. For the display of time and notifications, the Galaxy Z Flip uses a small external display that offers 300 × 116 pixels on 1.06 inches.
Larger than a Galaxy Note 10+, but lighter
When closed, the Galaxy Z Flip with 87.4 × 73.6 × 15.4 to 17.3 millimeters is a much more compact smartphone than the Galaxy Fold with 160.9 × 62.8 × 15.7 to 17.1 millimeters comes. When unfolded, it measures 167.9 × 73.6 × 6.9 to 7.2 millimeters, which easily surpasses the Galaxy Note 10+, which is 162.3 × 77.2 × 7.9 millimeters. In terms of weight, the Galaxy Z Flip, at 183 grams, is lighter than the Galaxy Note 10+ (196 g), Galaxy S10 + (198 g) and, above all, the Galaxy Fold (276 g).
In terms of technical specifications, Samsung remains true to the Galaxy Fold’s approach, so that only one variant with a Snapdragon processor is offered globally. However, Samsung does not rely on the brand new Snapdragon 865, but the Snapdragon 855+ and combines this with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB UFS 3.0, which cannot be expanded. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the smartphone will not be 5G capable. The battery with a total of 3,300 mAh is divided in two over the two halves of the device and can be charged with up to 15 watts by cable and wirelessly with up to 9 watts.
Selfie camera in the display
The rear dual camera works with two 12 megapixels and is divided into wide angle (f / 1.8, 78 degrees) and ultra wide angle (f / 2.2, 123 degrees). A 10-megapixel camera with auto focus sits in the circular recesses in the upper area of the inner display. Video recordings are supported in up to 4K with 60 FPS.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip in black and purple is expected to go on sale on February 14 at a price of around 1,500 euros.
