Not only is the smartphone market declining slightly, but tablets have also sold worse in the second quarter of 2019 than a year ago. Only Apple and Amazon have grown, with the iPad making up significantly more than a third of the entire market. Amazon grew the most in Q2 for seasonal reasons.
Apple continues to lead the tablet segment with the highest number of shipments and the largest market share. Apple sold 12.3 million iPads in the second quarter of 2019, achieving a market share of 38.1 percent. This corresponds to an increase of 6.1 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Especially the new iPad Air is said to have caused the analysts of IDC according to recovery.
Samsung opposes shrinking market
By far the second place in the ranking is Samsung with 4.9 million tablets and a market share of 15.2 percent. Although this is equal to a decline of 3.1 percent compared to the previous year, measured by the total market, Samsung has increased its share, however, by 0.3 percentage points. Although Samsung is the latest supplier of high-end tablets with Android, as the company has recently shown with the Galaxy Tab S6, most of the sales with tablets from the series Galaxy Tab A and Galaxy Tab E has been achieved, so IDC ,
Unlike Samsung, Huawei has not been able to oppose the declining market over the last three months, with the result that tablets slipped from 3.5 million to 3.3 million, down only 10.3 percent from 10.5 percent , Huawei is next to Samsung one of the few providers who still regularly introduces new Android tablets of the MediaPad series.
Amazon is a special case, because for seasonal reasons it comes mainly to the Christmas business and as now in preparation for the Prime Day for increased deliveries. That's why Amazon outperformed by 46.3 percent to 2.4 million tablets in the second quarter, finishing fourth.
Sales at Lenovo are down: 1.9 million tablets are up 2.0 million from the previous year. The group even grew in markets such as the USA, Western Europe and Japan, according to IDC. In regions like China, South America, Africa and Asia-Pacific, it must therefore have gone badly for Lenovo.
The market displaces the smaller providers
The entire market is focusing on the big brands at the top of the rankings, all other manufacturers together have shrunk by 25.9 percent and have sold just 7.5 million instead of the former 10.1 million tablets. In the second quarter of 2019, a total of 32.2 million tablets were sold, which corresponds to a decrease of 5 percent compared to the previous year with 33.9 million tablets.
