Trade War: US wants to allow sale of secure goods to Huawei

Handelskrieg: USA wollen Verkauf sicherer Güter an Huawei erlauben

The United States and Huawei have taken a small step towards finding peace in the current trade war. US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross has confirmed that the US government wants to allow the sale of safe goods to Huawei in the future. Uncertainty prevails, however, in the affected goods.

At the G20 summit, US President Trump announced earlier this month that he wanted to partially lift the export blockade against Huawei. However, the purely oral commitment has not yet been followed by an official agreement.

As US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross has now confirmed, the sale of goods to Huawei is to be regulated by licenses. At a conference in Washington, Ross said that Huawei will remain on the so-called “Entity List” for the time being, allowing Huawei to continue certain business processes so as not to be incapacitated from one day to the next. This license is valid for 90 days from May 20th and runs until August 18th.

Uncertainty about allowed goods

In order to implement the agreement envisaged by Donald Trump for the G20 summit, licenses will be granted to US exporting companies, provided their products do not affect US national security. However, this nonspecific statement causes frowns on companies and business observers, as it has not been disclosed by the US, which products can be exactly provided with licenses for export. One of Reuters Quoted commercial law lawyer argued that every company should be trying out applications that approve and approve exports.

The only thing that is clear at the moment is that products such as mobile network equipment and other infrastructure are prohibited. That a US provider in the near future with technology from Huawei, for example, the 5G network will build, is considered excluded.

Android is also available without Google

For the end user, an end to the commercial war, especially in the field of Android is important. As of August 19, Huawei's Consumer Business Group could no longer source Android with Google services from the United States. Although Huawei is open to use the Android Open Source Project as the basis for its own operating system, for customers, the Google services but an important part of the overall product. The decision of the US should also influence the launch of the autumn flagship “Mate 30 Pro”. To start the Mate 20 X 5G Huawei had assured to want to continue in the future on Android.
