At present, some iPhones from Apple are causing problems with Wi-Fi calls to customers of Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom, which is why the mobile operator Vodafone has already temporarily disabled this function with a network operator update.
New iPhones with Qualcomm modem are causing problems
Due to the patent dispute with Qualcomm, Apple had to temporarily take all iPhone 7 and 8 out of their own shops and the online shop in Germany and responded by selling the American versions of the iPhone 7 and 8 with Qualcomm instead of Intel modem in Germany potential patent infringement are not affected. Exactly these iPhone models now seem to have problems with wireless calls in the German mobile network.
iPhone 7 currently not affected by Vodafone
Vodafone has therefore with the network operator update to version 35.1 the function of wireless calls to iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus disabled. Why the iPhone 7 is excluded from this, is currently not clear – on an iPhone 7, the update is also recorded, but it does not block the wireless calls. Affected to be according to previous findings at Vodafone model numbers A1863, A1864 and A1865, which represent exactly these three iPhone models.
A Vodafone employee commented on the mobile operator's forum as follows:[…] In the affected models, there were some inconsistencies with other services, when using WiFi calling. To prevent affected customers from complaining, WiFi calling is temporarily disabled. Of course we will reactivate it as soon as the corrections have been made. Then it works reliably again.“
Also Telekom customers affected
However, not only Vodafone customers are affected by the problems with the new iPhone models, but also Telekom customers are already expressing problems. However, the function has not yet been deactivated by the Telekom.
The function of the Wi-Fi calls is to enable accessibility and the management of telephone calls in areas, houses and apartments with poor or no mobile network accessibility by using the local Internet connection via WLAN. Abroad, Deutsche Telekom and O2 even enable mobile calls at domestic prices via this function.
