Sony again offers a (comparatively) compact flagship smartphone: the Xperia 5. It is not as small as earlier Compact models, but smaller than the current top model Xperia 1 (test). From this smartphone inherits the Xperia 5 due to the size and apart from missing features, the entire equipment.
The Xperia 5, like the Xperia 1, is based on the film-optimized 21: 9 format, so that the display diagonal of 6.1 inches results in a relatively long but comparatively narrow smartphone. The Xperia 1 with 6.5-inch display is 9 mm longer and 4 mm wider and weighs 14 grams more. A real compact, like the Xperia XZ2 Compact from the spring of 2018, the Xperia 5 is not, but at least a little smaller. By comparison, the Xperia XZ2 Compact comes with a 5-inch display on 65 × 135 × 12.1 mm, the new Xperia 5 on 68 × 158 × 8.2 mm.
Display and battery are a little smaller
With the screen shrunk from 6.5 inches to 6.1 inches, the resolution has been adjusted. This is now at 1,080 × 2,520 pixels. The use of a POLED panel with HDR support has remained the same. The maximum brightness Sony specifies with high 650 cd / m². Over the display is a protective layer Corning Gorilla Glass 6. Again, Sony's smartphone engineers cooperate with their own TV division and rely on an X1 image processor for image output.
Aside from the dimensions and display, the battery is the third and final adaptation to the Xperia 1 due to the new size. The reduction is limited with 3,140 mAh to 3,300 mAh. USB Type C Power Delivery 3.0 is supported for charging, the included power supply delivers up to 18 watts. A 3.5 mm jack did not make it into the case.
Processor, memory and camera correspond to the Xperia 1
Apart from that, the Xperia 5 is one to one with the Xperia 1, so for example the Snapdragon 855, 6 GB RAM, 128 GB expandable memory and the Triple Camera are part of the overall package. The back of the smartphone is equipped with three lenses, behind each of which a sensor with 12 megapixels hides. The main camera works with 26 mm wide-angle (35 mm equivalent) at aperture f / 1.6 and is for the first time supported by an optical image stabilizer (OIS), which should provide together with the electronic image stabilizer (EIS) for shooting without wobble. The same applies to the 52 mm telephoto lens with aperture f / 2.4. In addition, the Xperia 1 offers a 16 mm super wide-angle lens with aperture f / 2.4, but without the OIS. However, the EIS is active on all three cameras. With the camera experts of its own CineAlta division, the new Cinema Pro app was created, which was designed for professional video recordings in the 21: 9 format.
Four colors are available
Sony wants to bring the Xperia 5 in Germany from early October with Android 9 Pie for the price of 799 euros in the colors black, gray, blue and red on the market.
